The Creative Mentor Part 9: Getting Fired // Moving to the next job // Quitting
Part 9 is focused on moving to the next opportunity.
Now that we have some experience under out belt, and grown a bit, what’s next?
Let’s talk about what happens when you’re fired, quit, thinking about getting a job, etc.
Knowing when it’s time to move on
Change is scary, but inevitable. It can feel really good when you’re ready to up your game! This week I talk about how to weigh your options when you’re ready for a change in your career, or ready to grow into something new.
Consider this:
Are you growing bored at work? Or do assignments feel stale and like the same old work [and not in a good way]
Are you growing bitter, are you tired, or burned out?
Do you feel like the walls are closing in, and you’re in a room that’s ‘too small’?
Does it feel like your managers keep holding a promotion over your head and keep making premisses you see no progress in?
these may all be signs it’s time to find a bigger and better opportunity
Get your portfolio updated and refresh your resume with some new stats, it’s job hunting time!
What happens when you quit a job?
A lot goes into quitting a job, you would be surprised. There’s a lot to say and do. I walk you through the process and the feelings as well as my suggestions of how to handle it and what you should remember for later.
Things that should happen when you quit:
You should give a two weeks notice if this was a career stepping stone job
Address your team directly about your leaving and moving projects over
Exit with humility and grace, everyone knows everyone
HR will ask you for an exit interview to better address pain points in the organization - let ‘er rip! Be honest in these!
Return any work equipment
You should see your benefits paid out in your final check
Things that should NOT happen:
Any hostility towards you [you didn’t betray anyone]
Being ignored or shunned for your last two weeks
Leaving a job can be hard! Hopefully it’s a positive celebration for you. I have found a lot of creatives are happy you’re on the glow up and they’re excited to see you grow. And “i Quit” often is not a forever good bye from your teams. Those people often go off to be friends or at the very least connections.
What Happens When You Get Fired?
I was fired once….8 years ago but still. Man, it sucks to get fired. A lot goes through your mind but the most important question is "What do I do now?". Well, as someone who's been fired before, I will tell you. It's not my favorite thing to bring up, but it’s important to know how to bounce back.
