Roland Garros Packaging
In 2020 Wilson became the official ball for Roland Garros, the French Open, which is one of 4 global tennis tournaments. It’s a very big shift in the tennis world for a French event to shift to an American sponsor. This shift entails not only providing the tennis balls for the tournament but creating an entire product line to partner with the event. I was charged with designing all the head cards that were to be displayed on all Adult and Junior Rackets, concepts for tennis cans to be sold at the event as well as be a permanent fixture in Wilson’s Tennis Ball line, and finally packaging for all Wilson accessories sold at Roland Garros including bag tags for our soft goods.
This was a co-branded effort with Roland Garros, as a designer, my responsibility was to balance the hierarchy of Wilson branding with that of Roland Garros per their style guide. I needed to incorporate their color pallet with all layouts for all packaging needs. I also needed to work closely with our Product Designers, Creative Director, and Brand Design Strategy Director to gain consistency in our over all product presentation when it was to be franchised at the event.
A unique subset of this project was that two of Wilson’s racket models would be skinned in a limited edition Rolland Garros release [100 rackets]. I was charged with making a specific and unique head card for these limited edition rackets. I pushed really hard to get the head cards to be of the same metallic shine that the string packaging [pictured above] was. It just pushed the collectible nature of the rackets on top of matching their finishes as well. It was little more expensive than the product department wanted but in the end we all agreed this metallic shine was what elevated the collectable-ness of the rackets. So I was happy to see this design got to reflect in the light of day and that my team was open to what looked best for the product in this instance.
